Dear Homeowner, Remodeling your kitchen has one of the highest returns-on-investment of all home remodel projects, but you need to know the potential risks and hidden “middle man” fees that the big box retailers are trying to hide from you. If you flip your kitchen yourself, or with the help of a few local handymen, you stand to dramatically increase the value of your home; a great move if you're considering selling or just want to have a kitchen you're proud of. A successful kitchen remodel increases the value of the home only second to replacing exterior siding. The problem is, when homeowners take on remodel projects, they can make a single fatal mistake that forces them to lose money on the project. As a frugal homeowner, it's your job to research and ultimately purchase the best kitchen cabinets possible.

Problem is, the big box retailers, like Home Depot and Lowes tack on excessive middle man fees that can gut your budget, leaving them to profit wildly while you are getting cabinets you could have purchased elsewhere for thousands less. My name is Gary Nealon and I'm determined to help you avoid the single biggest mistake homeowners make when renovating their kitchen. As the owner of the premier ready-to-assemble cabinet store, I've heard all sorts of stories of successes, failures and worse being ripped off. Let me show you what a recent mystery shopper, Mike, a friend of mine, did at the local big box stores.

Mike went into Home Depot and gave a clear specification of the exact size of his kitchen that he's truthfully looking to remodel. He wanted to see if the prices he could get at my ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinet store were really all that good. With a sketch of the kitchen in his hand, he walked to the cabinet department and rang the bell. Waiting for a Design Consultant to arrive, he spent a few minutes checking his phone and looking around.

Finally, the consultant came to the counter and offered to help. Mike stated what he needed and asked for a rough quote, so he could see if Home Depot was in his budget. The Design Consultant worked with Mike to lay out the ideal kitchen, choose from the models they had available in-store as well as those he could custom order. The process was smooth, but he was hit with a stark reality it would take 7 weeks for the cabinets to be delivered.

Without an option to rush the delivery, Mike would have had to wait almost two months for the cabinets to be delivered to his home. The full set of cabinets shipped to his home from Home Depot's warehouse was quoted at $14,401.56 after taxes: That same day, Mike drove across town to Lowes to see what they had. Again, he was met by a Kitchen Project Specialist who walked him through the process of mapping out the best cabinets to fit into his kitchen.

One of the major benefits that both Lowes and Home Depot offered was the ability to see the cabinets before Mike decided which to purchase. He could feel the weight of the doors and really see how they looked.

After meeting with the Kitchen Project Specialist for nearly 90 minutes, Mike received his quote. $12,320 for everything, shipped right to his door. Over $2,180 difference just by going across town.

How could there be such a huge discrepancy in price between two competing stores? In a state of confusion, Mike gave me a call.

Go out and ask any successful general contractor you know and they'll tell you it's the truth. For nails, a few pieces of lumber, that last minute drill bit, the big box stores are life savers. But for big purchases, like kitchen cabinets?

They are marked up so high, it's bordering on absurdity. The majority of cabinets the big box retailers are selling come from factories overseas. They're shipped over to the US on big barges, in cargo containers. Once those containers are offloaded at the port, they're taken to a distribution center where they're packaged and mailed out to consumers.

Home Depot and Lowes both act as the showcase for the cabinets, but offer nothing unique. Since anyone who dares to compete with them needs a large showroom and offshore relationships for product, direct competition is low.

I remember the day I heard about the obscene price gouging that goes on at these retailers, and I made it my mission to find a way to offer the best kitchen cabinets at affordable prices. I set out to build relationships overseas and produce a superior product.
