Detroit-based singer and MC Monica Blaire has carved a significant spot for herself in that city's musical landscape. With an eclectic sound that relies heavily on hip-hop but also borrows elements of rock, soul and jazz, she has fronted several local groups and has won over local audiences with her energetic performances that spotlight both her expressive vocals as well as her sometimes frenetic dancing. In 2006 she released her debut album, Portraits of Me, to positive local reviews. Her reputation outside of Detroit grew exponentially during her performances at the SoulTracks Readers' Choice Awards industry party and the Urban Organic Anniversary Festival during November 2007, leaving visiting soulheads asking 'Who was that?' She is an artist on the rise.
